Both Legs Above Knee Stubbies

"I walked for 41 years, and I will still walk, even without legs."

"I walked for 41 years, and I will still walk, even without legs."

An industrial engineering graduate from North Karnataka, had always been a go-getter—a fiercely independent woman who worked in the garment sector for over 18 years.

Rupa Prasanna Desai, an industrial engineering graduate from North Karnataka, had always been a go-getter—a fiercely independent woman who worked in the garment sector for over 18 years. Life took a sharp turn when an accident changed everything. Rupa and her daughter were waiting at a signal when a drunk driver crashed into her bike. While her daughter miraculously escaped unharmed, Rupa’s legs were crushed beneath the tyres.

Fortunately, a doctor happened to be at the scene and, with the help of a kind bus driver, they rescued her. But the damage was severe. Both of Rupa’s legs had to be amputated.

"I walked for 41 years, and I will still walk, even without legs," Rupa says with determination. It’s been a long journey—where she once completed 10,000 steps by 3 p.m., now walking just a few hundred steps takes time and effort. But her spirit remains undeterred.

Rupa credits her incredible support system—her family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors—for standing by her. In August, she met Arun Cherian, founder of Rise Bionics, and his team, and they immediately understood her needs. "They had a practical approach," she says. "They never made me feel uncomfortable, even though I was a woman dealing with a difficult recovery."

Today, Rupa is on her four-inch stubbies, taking one step at a time. "It’s a marathon, and I need to move slowly but precisely."
